How to Find the Right Audience on Instagram
Follower count doesn't win; the right followers do. A step-by-step way to define and find your audience on Instagram.

The most common mistake in growing an Instagram account is trying to grow before defining the audience. Follower count climbs, but sales, messages and engagement stay flat. There is only one reason for this: the audience isn't interested in what you do.
Define the audience first
Write it down before you go looking. Answer three questions clearly:
- Who? Age range, city, occupation, interests.
- Which problem? How do they currently solve the problem you solve?
- Where do they hang out? Which accounts do they follow, under which hashtags do they talk?
Without these three answers, every search you run is guesswork.
Three sources for finding your audience
1. Competitor and neighbouring accounts
The followers of accounts doing what you do are the strongest source for your audience. Don't skip what we call "neighbouring accounts" either — accounts selling a different product to the same audience. A coffee brand's follower is also valuable to an account selling home-office products.
2. Hashtags
People posting under a hashtag have shown they are active on that topic. Prefer narrow hashtags (#vintageshirt) over broad ones (#fashion). Fewer people, higher interest.
3. Location
If you serve a local area, location tags are the most productive source. Look at the tags of popular venues in your own neighbourhood.
Never use a list without filtering it
A significant part of any raw list is useless: abandoned accounts, sales bots, users in an irrelevant language. Apply at least these filters:
| Criterion | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Post count | Remove accounts with fewer than 3 |
| Follower/following ratio | Drop wildly unbalanced accounts |
| Profile photo | Remove accounts without one |
| Language / bio | Drop accounts that don't match your target language |
Your list will shrink after filtering. That is a good sign.
Measure first, then scale
Once you start working with an audience list, set a two-week measurement window and watch: incoming follow rate, profile visits, message count. If the result is weak, the list is wrong — you need a better list, not more engagement.
